THE TOOL NOTEBOOK

Choose a manual cutting tool

Distinguish complete cutters from refills

A cut-off wire with two handles is a different purchase from a spool of replacement wire. Confirm the exact working length and whether a dimension describes the wire, the whole tool or its packaging. For a harp or frame cutter, read the supplied blade or wire specification separately from the frame size. Do not infer a usable cutting span from a photograph’s scale.

Read tip and blade geometry

Needle tools and fettling knives can differ in point shape, blade outline and handle arrangement. A general craft-tool label does not establish a pottery purpose or suitability at every stage of drying. Compare the selected working end and the manufacturer’s stated application. A tool with several points or ends should still be counted by complete units when comparing a set.

Match the listing to your task

Choose from tools whose documented geometry matches the manual task you have in mind. Source descriptions are not a cutting test on your clay, and no universal sharpness, edge life or material compatibility is established by the catalogue. Follow the exact handling and care instructions. Keep replacement-part fit and complete-tool selection as separate decisions.
